Our recent survey results informed us of New Brighton being the most popular beach destinations, with a range of views on how severe the pollution issue was.
When visiting the area, we were shocked at how much rubbish we found, as within 30 minutes we managed to collect the amount of rubbish below. In our collection, we found a large number of drink cans or bottles and fish and chip papers. Overall, most of the litter was situated 200m either side of the pier in the sand dune area. What we found most annoying was large amounts of litter very close to the bins!
Thanks to Pieter Borcherds, Ranger – Project Manager for Regional Parks from the Christchurch City Council, for supplying us with bags, gloves and disposal for our litter collection.
